SMC X-1 is spinning up more then 30 years. On short time scales
it is showing pulse period variations. Spin down episode is never observed. For the orbital parameters, small eccentricity is found by
two independent observers Inam, Baykal, Beklen, MNRAS, 403, 378, 2010 and Harsha, and Biswajit MNRAS 401, 1532, 2010. In the discussion Cen X-3 and SMC X-1 was confused. Eccentricity of Cen X-3 is caused by pulse profile changes (see Harsha and Biswajit 2010).
